Valentine’s Day is a Hallmark holiday, but at this point, which of our holidays aren’t rooted in commercialism? I used to be quite cynical about Valentine’s Day, but lately my thinking has changed. A common argument against Valentine’s Day that I often hear is that people shouldn’t only be kind to their spouses on one day. To that I say, “well, of course” and “duh.” No one suggested that.
To me, Valentine’s Day is simply an extra day to celebrate being in love. That is not to say you shouldn’t be a good spouse every day and randomly surprise each other with gifts and outings, but I also don’t think there is anything wrong with a bit of harmless fun. My anniversary with JP is personal to us and will always be more meaningful, but I see nothing wrong with an extra day dedicated to being in love.
If you don’t want to buy into the commercialism, write a love letter to your spouse or make him or her a homemade gift. If you do want to buy a gift, well, you’re in luck! If you choose to celebrate Valentine’s Day, below is my gift guide (at every price point) that I hope can take some of the pressure to find the “perfect” gift away!
Do you celebrate Valentine’s Day?
Michael Kors Watch. JP collects watches but even if your husband doesn’t, I don’t think you can go wrong with this gift. I’ve never met a man who doesn’t have at least one watch!
BBQ Grill Tools Set. I do all of the cooking at our house except anything that goes on the grill because the barbecue is JP’s domain. This BBQ accessory kit is JP approved.
Kenneth Cole REACTION Belt. JP has several Kenneth Cole belts and they are both a good price and good quality (not to mention stylish!).
Stud Gift Basket. Similar to the t-shirts that I suggested above, this is another cute and quirky gift that I think would work well for new couples.
Pink Point and Shoot Camera . This camera is both festive and good quality, so if your girl is in the market for a point and shoot level camera, you can’t go wrong with this one.
Cozy Robe . Guys, unless you know her exact size (which can change based on brand), don’t try and buy her clothes. Robes are a good exception to the rule because you should know her general size and what would be able to wrap around her body…right?
Candle. Most women I know love candles and this one smells delicious!
Roses. It’s a cliche, but some women really do love to get red roses on Valentine’s Day (and other days, too!). I am not one of them as I personally think flowers are a waste of money, BUT several of my friends love to get them. JP knows that he would be better off writing me a cheque than bringing home roses, but I assure you that most women are not like me!
Burt’s Bees Everyday Essential Beauty Kit. For a guy on a budget, this under $10 gift is both thoughtful and useful. I make all of my own personal care products, but I know that a lot of people don’t want to be bothered with doing that. Burt’s is a great alternative!
Michael Kors Watch. I don’t like jewellery (or flowers, spas, or traditionally “girly” things – poor JP has a very hard time buying gifts for me), but I can’t think of any other woman I know who feels the same way. Even I have to admit that rose gold is quite beautiful and this watch is so stunning that even I’d wear it!
His or Hers
Aromatherapy and Massage Essential Oils Kit. This is some great “mood setting” for couples old and new!
Wine. You can’t go wrong with delicious California wine for either gender.
Kindle Fire. For the technology lover in your life, the Kindle Fire is a great addition.
Godiva Chocolatier Classic Gold Ballotin Chocolates. JP doesn’t like chocolate unless they are Godiva. They are pricey but worth it (and I fully admit to stealing some)!
Fitbit Charge HR. So many people are getting into fitness, likely because it is still the beginning of the year. However, a Fitbit is an easy way to keep your momentum and motivation going all year long.
Disclosure: if you buy any of these products from me, or do any of your amazon.com shopping through my store, my sweet boxer, B, will get some treat money. He thanks you in advance for supporting his cookie addiction and I thank you for supporting my blog.
