Cast of Characters

Welcome to my corner of the internet. I’m passionate about writing and I have always been curious about the blogging world. I’m hoping to use this space as one of my creative outlets where I will write about:

  • Married life (the good, the bad, and the ugly)
  • The things I cross off my bucket list (and add to it!)
  •  My personal quest towards physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle (including adventures and misadventures in the kitchen, working out, and sourcing sustainable, local food products)
  • Personal topics that matter to me (you’re getting a sneak peek into my journal!)

I love sharing what I’m learning and thinking about, including my general musings about life’s idiosyncrasies, and documenting the fun that I’m having along the way. I’m always seeking to broaden my horizons, make lasting memories, and uncover the wonder in day-to-day experiences. We only get one shot at this and I want to make sure my life is as complete, fulfilling, and enjoyable as possible.

The Cast of Characters

Me: I am a 28 (and counting) year old marketing communications professional trying to have it all. Sometimes I feel like I’m getting closer to achieving my goals, and other times I feel like a walking panic attack (which, fortunately, others don’t seem to notice). I’m a country girl at heart who longs for wide open spaces, a beautiful waterfront, and a log cabin to call home. One day, we will get there (don’t worry, I’ll bring my laptop and get a WiFi connection).

My husband (JP): He is a 30-something trades guy who is always building, fixing, renovating, or creating something. No project is too big or too small for him to take on and I am consistently amazed at what he can accomplish. JP is calm to my crazy, creative to my bookish, and spontaneous to my practical.

He challenges me to push boundaries, take risks, and get more out of life…even though he probably speaks 20 words for every 100 of mine. He’s also known to fall asleep during movies (even at theatres), get completely lost in a project for hours on end (maybe he’s just ignoring me), and carrying our 65 pound boxer around (the daddy-vator).

Our boxer (B): He is a 3 year old wonderful, rambunctious, loveable brindle boxer puppy who means the world to us. B adds so much joy to our lives and never fails to make us smile. He’s been through a lot health wise, including a bout with cancer, but he has pulled through and kept his spirits up. We have trained him diligently, socialized him carefully, and love bringing him along on our adventures.

My mom (Grams): She is a small but mighty lady who is a big part of our lives. We recently lost my father and Grams fills her time being a grandma to her grandpup, B, and trying to take care of me and JP (we don’t always make it easy). She has countless hobbies and activities and she leads a very active, social, and full life.

We also may (or may not) expand our family at some point. That will absolutely include a second (and possibly third…just don’t tell JP) dog and will potentially include a child or two. We are definitely “at that age” where everyone is asking, but we are still trying to figure out the answer.

Thanks for stopping by and for your patience while I figure things out. I hope you’ll find the content I provide meaningful, relatable, and occasionally humorous. I’m learning as I go and I hope that you will stick around and share my journey with me.

  1. Thanks for stopping by my blog and liking something. I am enjoying my visit to yours. Must tell you as a retired editor, I find it not so easy to read your white type reversed out of black. Don’t know if I am the first to mention this but I bet I’m not the only one who thinks it.

    1. Thanks, Tony! As an aspiring writer, I am pleased to meet a real life editor (and get free feedback!). I have updated my theme and I hope you find my blog easier to read now. If not, please let me know and I will try again! 🙂

  2. Scarlet – Thanks for your kind words. I think the new format of black type on a white page is very much more readable. I appreciate your taking my observation to heart. For you own peace of mind, please do check with others and see what they day. I used to edit magazines and if I ever wanted to hide something in plain sight, I would always reverse it out. I think you are doing a very nice job in terms of writing the blog. Just fyi, I am a 75 year old retired writer and journalist. I worked for Reuters for 20 years after doing magazines for the first part of my career. I say that to put into perspective my commenting. I have only been blogging for the past 5+ years, so I consider myself a relative newbie at it. I was a financial journalist. Now I am a diet, exercise and healthy aging blogger.

  3. Since you mentioned you’re trying to figure it out….The best decision I made was to have a child. I was a career woman. I asked my favorite aunt, a childless career woman her opinion. She said absolutely have one! She couldn’t and it was hard on her. One of my best friends from work, we meet when my daughter was very young, said she and her husband decided they were “child” people. Couldn’t handle diapers or crying. Fast forward to our retirement years….guess what her biggest regret is? She’s in the battle of her life, cancer, and she questions who will take care of her in her old age….

    1. I can definitely see the pros and cons of both sides. I’ve seen far too many children turn into adults who don’t really care about their parents to count on any of my potential future children as a long term care plan (maybe I’m jaded, lol). I don’t want to define myself by my career anymore (I used to!) but I’m not sure I want to be defined by motherhood either.

My husband and I have a pretty good life right now, so I’m hesitant to change it! At 28, we do need to make a decision relatively soon, which we will likely do in the new year.

Thank you so much for sharing your perspective with me!

      1. My son in law wasn’t really on board but my daughter, as an only child, said it was a deal breaker for marriage. So she in turn waited for him. He talked to lots of people to get their opinions. My daughter’s biological clock began ticking and at age 30, he finally said ok. Now he says he never knew how wonderful love is-for his son! Their second one is due any day! My daughter is 33. My husband and I never pressured her. We never really banked on being grandparents. Now that we are, it’s the greatest gift ever! We’re crazy in love with our first grandson!

      2. My mom (Grams) is very eagerly awaiting grandchildren! She doesn’t pressure, but we do know that she really wants it to happen, LOL. I’m currently on a journey back towards better health, so once I get a few health-related issues in order and lose some weight, I will be better able to handle the physical demands of pregnancy (if we do go that route).

  6. Thanks for liking my post today.

I see that your husband is a “water baby” and your following behind closely. We are a water family with a newly graduated professional photographer in the family(our son) who also enjoy waterfalls, standup paddling, and whitewater kayaking. We can’t wait until summer here to get our feet wet again.

I would love to know where and what waterfalls you have explored…..if your willing to share more.

    1. We can’t wait for summer too! I wish the snow would melt already and we could move on to a season where it is enjoyable to be outside. I am so sick and tired of being cold – I think we need to move actually! LOL

Most of the waterfalls that we have explored are within a few hours’ drive of our home (many in Hamilton, Ontario and the Muskokas, where we recently purchased a cottage).

Hamilton is the unofficial waterfall capital of Southern Ontario and I’m pretty sure that we have been to every single one. I’m not sure where you live, but the green space and hiking is phenomenal, so I highly recommend Hamilton for nature photography. Here is a list of waterfalls: http://www.waterfalls.hamilton.ca/

Congrats to your son and thank you for stopping by!

  7. Hi Scarlet! I saw that you found my blog & I thought I would check yours out as well! It really is full of some great stuff, definitely some good writing! One of the projects I’m doing with my blog is testing out different healthy recipes & posting about them (how easy it was to make, how great it tastes, where I found the recipe – handing out full credit to the original chef/blog!, etc.). I would love to do a post on one of your items once I get a bit more established, if that would be okay with you, of course?! Feel free to send me a message with your thoughts!
